Radiology
Department of Diagnostic Imaging and Therapeutics
The Department of Diagnostic Imaging and Therapeutics
provides clinical services in diagnostic radiology,
interventional radiology, ultrasound, vascular laboratory,
cross sectional imaging (CT scan and magnetic resonance imaging),
nuclear medicine and radiation oncology. Several
of our services are provided by unique centers of excellence
formed through partnerships with other departments. These include the Microvascular Imaging Laboratory with
the Department of Ophthalmology, the Temporal Mandibular Joint MRI Service with
the Department of Oral Radiology and the Bone Density
Service with the Department of Endocrinology. There are also several
cooperative interdepartmental activities with the Department
of Surgery, including the Vascular Laboratory, a Breast Core Biopsy
Program and ultrasound-guided intraoperative tumor ablation.
In addition, radiology services are provided to nearly
15,000 inmates in 21 facilities throughout the state of
Connecticut through the Correctional Managed
Care Program .
In addition to its clinical services, the Department of
Diagnostic Imaging and Therapeutics has two research
divisions: Research in Imaging for Diagnostic Medicine and
the Biomolecular Structure Analysis Center. Exciting
initiatives are underway in these areas, including the
development of a Digital Diagnostic Imaging Center, a joint
research initiative in functional MRI with the psychiatry and
neurology departments, the development of an X-ray
extensometer that will allow the identification of breast
tissue using monochromatic X-ray energy and two new
X-ray sensors.
An added benefit of our joint clinical ventures is the
participation of faculty from the School of Dental Medicine
and other areas in the School of Medicine in teaching and
research activities that enrich the educational experience
and create a multidisciplinary collaborative research
environment. Special emphasis is placed on the teaching of
medical students both during a monthly rotation in the
department and as part of their regular yearly curriculum.
An exceptional educational tool was developed this year with
the Department of Pathology in which radiologic exams were
digitized and correlated with pathologic findings into a
Radiology/Pathology Museum.
We hope you find this website to be a helpful tool.
